Team Lopez:  A Family Tradition in Honor of Sandra

As Susan G. Komen was founded by Suzy’s Sister Nancy Brinker, Karla Lopez created Team Lopez in 2009 in honor of her sister, Sandra Lopez.  With no family history of the disease, Sandra was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in 2008 which reappeared four years later at Stage 4. Facing Sandra’s illness with a positive attitude and tremendous strength and courage, Team Lopez declares that, “by participating we do our share to give back to the community and have fun at the same time.  We turned something negative (my sister’s cancer) into something positive and meaningful as we Race for the Cure together!”

Now, there are more than 92 dedicated family and friends that Race to honor Sandra. They continue recruiting in the hopes of an even stronger team in the 2013 Race for the Cure.  According to Karla, Sandra is so grateful for the “love and support family and friends show her by participating in the Race with her.”  Having raised a whopping $1,780 in the 2012 Race for the Cure, Karla, announced an ambitious goal of $2,500 for this year’s race.

This Team of the Month not only raises money to ultimately benefit the uninsured and under insured women with breast cancer in San Diego County, but also aims to raise awareness of the disease.  Last year, Karla and her teammates hosted an event at Restaurant Rincon Del Mar in National City to involve the community and notify them of the services Komen San Diego has to offer.  Team Lopez boasts that, “Together, we can make a difference, we can spread the word, inform the community, help others that are going through this as well by participating and donating.  Every little bit counts.”

Team Lopez, Komen San Diego greatly appreciates your dedication to finding a cure for breast cancer.  You are an inspiration to all, and we look forward to seeing Sandra’s smiling face, surrounded by her very large crew, crossing the finish line in November.
