01 Jun The San Diego Padres and Susan G. Komen San Diego to Host Second Annual Free Mammogram Event at Petco Park
SAN DIEGO – April 3, 2018 – Susan G. Komen San Diego will team up with the San Diego Padres and the Padres Foundation to provide uninsured, under-insured and low income San Diegans access to FREE mammograms on Friday, June 8 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Petco Park’s Park at the Park. In addition to mammograms, Komen San Diego provides year-round biopsies, ultrasounds, care coordination, education, research, advocacy support and financial assistance for breast cancer patients’ most critical needs during treatment.
“The Padres and Padres Foundation are enthusiastic about partnering with Susan G. Komen San Diego again to bring free mammograms to our community,” said Tom Seidler, the Padres’ senior vice president, community and military affairs. “It is imperative to bring valuable services to San Diegans to save lives and one day end breast cancer forever.”
At last year’s event, 71 women in need were screened; 14 women had abnormal findings and were referred for further diagnostic testing and follow-up care. In San Diego, six women a day are diagnosed with breast cancer and unfortunately one woman a day passes away from this disease. However, early detection and effective treatment provide the best chance of survival from breast cancer. And that’s what Komen San Diego’s work and this event with the Padres is all about.
“Komen San Diego’s foundational goal is to achieve health equity for women. We have all watched this year in admiration as women speak up, use their voices, and talk about the unspoken,” said Shaina Gross, president and CEO, Susan G. Komen San Diego. “For many in San Diego County, the unspoken is breast cancer. As much as we feel like we see pink everywhere, we know that there are entire communities, right here in San Diego, who don’t talk about their diagnosis. They don’t share their family history or their abnormal mammogram results. And they don’t talk about their health challenges. Komen San Diego, the Padres and our partners are here to be their voice and make sure women’s health is a priority.”
This event will provide free mammograms and clinical breast exams for San Diegans who do not have health insurance or who are under-insured. Attendees will also receive primary medical placement and be linked to a medical home for follow-up care. Those who are eligible for a free screening at this event include women who are over 40 years of age and had their last mammogram at least one full year ago, those who are under 40 years of age and are experiencing symptoms and those who are low-income or have barriers to accessing screening through current providers. If it hasn’t been a full year since someone’s last mammogram and they need assistance, please call 2-1-1 to speak with a breast health specialist.
This event is also put on in partnership with Alinea Medical Imaging, Every Woman Counts, Family Health Centers of San Diego, and San Ysidro Health. For more information on free mammograms, visit KomenSanDiego.org.
