Taking a moment to remember how this movement all began.
In 1977, at the age of 33, Suzy Komen was stricken with breast cancer. She endured 3 years of grueling chemotherapy and radiation, an uninformed doctor, and disheartening surgeries.
Suzy begged her sister, Nancy, to do something – anything – to make sure that other women with breast cancer would not have to suffer the way she did.
“Promise me, Nanny,” she said. “Promise me you won’t let it go on like this.” Her heart broken sister, Nancy promised: “I swear, Suzy. Even if it takes the rest of my life.” Suzy passed away on August 4, 1980, but Nancy followed through with her promise, and Susan G. Komen for the Cure was born.
