09 Jul 2018 Race for the Cure Honorary Survivor, Lilian Vanvieldt-Gray, Joins Susan G. Komen® San Diego’s Board of Directors
It is our pleasure to announce Lilian Vanvieldt-Gray, Komen San Diego’s 2018 Race for the Cure Honorary Survivor, has joined our Board of Directors!
Breast cancer is personal for Lilian. In 2017, Vanvieldt-Gray found out she had stage III breast cancer in an airport on the other side of the world. She credits her survival to her mammogram, treatments developed by Komen-funded research, positive outlook, and the unwavering support of her husband, family, employer, Alliant Insurance Service, and her friends.
In 2017, Vanvieldt-Gray’s husband, Douglas Gray, created a Race for the Cure team of almost 50 friends, colleagues and family to rally behind Lilian. They raised over $33,000 for Komen San Diego with over 160 individual donations.
Since her diagnosis, Lilian has been a fierce breast health advocate for women, and especially African American women in San Diego.
“As an African American woman, I was shocked to learn breast cancer is the most common cancer among African American women and we also have a lower survival rate than women from other racial and ethnic groups in the United States. I believe in creating possibilities. We must do more. We need more research. We need more support services,” said Vanvieldt-Gray.
In 2019, Lilian also spoke at Komen San Diego’s More Than Pink Annual Dinner with her physician Dr. Siavash Jabbari, walking the attendees through her breast cancer journey from both the patient’s and physician’s vantage point.
Currently, Lilian is a Senior Vice President and Educational Entities Practice Leader at Alliant Insurance Services. Recognized nationally as an educational entities insurance specialist, she expertly manages complex operations, creates strategic risk plans, and designs manuscript insurance coverage documents. She holds a Bachelor of Arts with a major in History and Economics from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).
Lilian’s courage and passion is a perfect fit for our Board of Directors, and we are thrilled to have her on board.
