New Komen-funded research published in the journal Oncogene has shown that the hormone progesterone might stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells that are resistant to anti-estrogen therapy and chemotherapy. The study explains that these hormones are frequently given to patients to treat side effects of chemotherapy, but could actually be causing effective cancer drugs to fail sooner in some women with breast cancer. In-depth interviews revealed that while many women described family-related issues as important stress-inducers during cancer treatment, 64 percent of them had not received any type of stress management tools or information during their treatment.
