Family Owned Jerome’s Furniture, Inspired by Their Own Battles with Breast Cancer, Step Up with Generous Donation to Susan G. Komen San Diego
Jerome’s is the Race for the Cure’s Local Presenting Sponsor, Registration and Packet Pickup Sponsor and exclusive Sleep In for the Cure Sponsor. The two sisters of the well-known and family-run San Diego company, Jerome’s Furniture, are breast cancer survivors and inspired the company to make a generous donation to Susan G. Komen San Diego. As part of the partnership, Jerome’s furniture will be a Local Presenting Sponsor at the 2014 Komen San Diego Race for the Cure, the exclusive Race Registration and Packet Pickup Sponsor, taking place at their Morena and San Marcos locations, and the exclusive Sleep in for the Cure Sponsor.
One of the “Jerome’s” sisters, Annie Navarra was diagnosed in 1990 at the age of 42 and underwent a mastectomy followed by chemotherapy and radiation. The breast cancer landscape was very different in 1990 and her treatment was considered radical by today’s standards. Annie remembers how overwhelming the experience was to follow everything she was told and all the instructions her doctors threw at her.
“I relied heavily on my sister and family for their support,” said Navarra. “I realize that there are women out there that don’t have the support I had but that is where Komen steps in.”
Twenty-two years later, Annie’s sister, Adeline Williamson found a lump in her breast, but three different doctors told her it was just a cyst and she had nothing to worry about. They all told her they were 90 percent sure it was nothing. Adeline knew that even though it was benign she could not live with a lump so she asked to have it removed. Only then did they find out it was actually cancerous. She wants women to trust themselves, understand and know their bodies and advocate for their own health, like she did.
“We are family owned and operated which means we support not only our own family, but our community family as well,” said Jerry Navarra, Annie and Adeline’s brother and Chairman of the Board of Jerome’s Furniture. “It was a no brainer to partner with Komen San Diego after finding out that they support women just like my sisters get through their own battles by providing services they might not otherwise be able to afford.”
Sleep in for the Cure is a way for people to get involved in and fundraise for the Race if they are out of the area, don’t want to wake up early the day of or are unable to do the 5K. When registered for Sleep In for the Cure, participants receive a Race t-shirt, a Race bib that says “Snooze” and a special door hanger. The Race for the Cure raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates survivors and honors those who have lost their battle with this all too prevalent disease. When San Diegans participate, their donations go directly to help breast cancer patients in San Diego, as well as towards research grants internationally.
“Jerome’s Furniture is a cornerstone in the San Diego community and we are honored to call them partners in the promise to stop this disease,” said Laura Farmer Sherman, executive director of Susan G. Komen San Diego. “With their leadership and support I know we will be able to provide many more life-saving services to local women fighting breast cancer.”
