Komen is looking to recruit new community grant reviewers
All year round, we’re hard at work raising funds to assist San Diego County’s uninsured women and their families. Through the Race for the Cure®, The Breast Cancer 3 Day and donations from people like you, we’re able to fund everything from free mammograms and surgeries to meal delivery and child care. Everything an uninsured woman needs to survive – and thrive – through a breast cancer diagnosis.
In fact, 75% of each dollar raised stays here to fund local programs. The remaining 25% funds international research.
Now, we’re looking for a select group of community activists to evaluate and score the grant applications we will receive – the grants that will actually assist the uninsured women in our community.
Training for this important role begins in November and the grant review process ends in early February. Volunteers would spend between 20-25 hours of time.
Last year we granted over $1.2 million to organizations that work to fulfill our mission of lowering the incidence and mortality of breast cancer. Funds for these grants are raised through the Race for the Cure and other smaller events throughout the year. As a result of your efforts, 75% of funds raised stay in San Diego County to fund support services, diagnostics, education and outreach programs. The remaining 25% of funds raised go to national and international breast cancer research. The grant applications are received from community-based organizations, universities, hospitals and similar institutions. The grants awarded support evidence-based strategies and promising practices to reduce disparities in breast cancer mortality in San Diego County.
