Sandra Lopez, Cherished 2020 Race for the Cure Honorary Breast Cancer Survivor, Passed Away of Metastatic Breast Cancer

Our Komen family and the San Diego Community lost a beautiful soul on Monday, August 17, 2020.
Sandra Lopez, 2020 Race for the Cure Honorary Breast Cancer Survivor, mother of three boys, sister to five siblings, a daughter and wife passed away at the age of 49.

2019 was Team Lopez’s 11th year walking in Komen San Diego’s Race for the Cure. Karla Lopez, Komen San Diego’s Outreach and Office Coordinator, created Team Lopez in 2009 after her sister, Sandra, was diagnosed with Stage III Breast Cancer. For over a decade, Team Lopez walked to come together as a family and give back to Komen San Diego and the community. With over 100 teammates annually, Team Lopez grew to be the largest non-corporate team in the Race for the Cure.

Between Team Lopez’s registration fees and fundraising activities, they contributed over $50,000 to the fight against breast cancer.

After being in remission for a year and a half, Sandra was re-diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2012. This time with Metastatic/Stage IV Breast Cancer. The news was more devastating than her first diagnosis. The doctor gave Sandra five years to live but said she would help her live comfortably with medication. Despite all the odds, Sandra lived for 8 more years, inspiring hundreds of families along the way.

Sandra enjoyed and lived life as if she wasn’t sick all those years. Despite new challenges of fighting this disease and going through new rounds of chemo during the COVID-19 pandemic, Karla, Sandra, and the entire Lopez family were warriors battling this disease together.

“We got 12 more years with my sister due to advancements in breast cancer care and I know the next generation won’t have to say goodbye like we did,” said Karla.

Sandra was a light of positivity in the Komen San Diego office – a pillar of strength – and motivating force for all of us.

Sandra’s happy demeanor, her humor, and her love will be deeply missed by the entire Komen family, but her impact will continue to live on.
